Home abstract

Our home began building in 1904 and was completed in 1910. This Victorian styled home is adorned with high ceilings and ornate molding on the main level. We offer our guest 5 rooms to choose from. The home has three gas fireplaces one in the entry way, the second in the living room and the third is located in the Massage room. There are an additional three electric fireplaces located in Nature's Niche, Crusader's Quest, and the Twilight room. The home offers many interesting and unique things for our guests to look at from decorations to antiques. Our guests enjoy the large covered wrap around porch offering a large side yard with multiple flower beds. The Courtyard is located in the rear of the property providing our guests with a large brick patio, flower beds, brick path to go from building to building and a beautiful yard to enjoy. There are a total of 5 buildings on the property including the main house, all located behind the main house. The InnKeepers reside in the Carriage House. The other three buildings are the Smoke house used for lawn equipment, a Salt house which is currently used for storage, and a log cabin. The log cabin was built in 1854, the same year Osawatomie was founded, and was originally located in Olathe. It was moved to the property and restored, however, the cabin needs to be restored again since it was not maintained properly, it does however, provides a great conversation item. Eventually the Log cabin will have a Hot tub and bar.

Robert Pyle the great great grandson of the Ellen Pyle and her husband, the original owners stopped by and provided use with some wonder information on how the original floor plan. Robert and his family lived at 316 Brown here in Osawatomie from 1941 to 1946 and stayed here in this home with his grandmother. We were pleased to meet Robert and now be able to share with our guests and potential guests with more information on the home itself.

The grounds were covered in all types of flowers and the back yard, which is larger today than originally, was covered in Hollyhocks. Today our guests enjoy the brick courtyard, many flower beds, and a large pecan tree that shades the courtyard.

In 1948 Harry A. and Marie Bruce Pyle moved in the this home. Both were members of the Osawatomie Chamber and were the General Chairperson for the 100th celebration. Harry was the true author of the book called "the Town between two rivers" but did not publish.

Lets talk about how the home has changed. Starting from the top and going down I will describe the floor plan then and now. In the original floor plan there was a large attic where the children played in the area now called the Twilight Room and the area where the children setting area, the Crusader's Quest and its bath was open and used as storage.

The second floor had four bedrooms and one bath and now offers three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The Mystic Realm was Robert's room and its bath is located in the same place as the original.

The Enchanted Garden bath was a small bedroom which explains why there is a closet in the room.

The Enchanted Garden bedroom was the setting room separated by pocket doors to the master bed room which is now Nature's Niche.

The Nature's Niche bathroom was originally used as a sewing room and it had a pot belly stove on the wall.

On the first floor the entry was laid out as a room since the staircase was not open to the door it was walled off. This explains why there is a fireplace in the entry, since it was used as a sitting room before. The now open living room was broken down into to separate rooms with pocket doors in between. The front of the living room when you first enter the home was the Formal living room and on the other side where the fireplace is was the Formal Dining room which adorned a hugh table that went from one end of the room to the other in order to accommodate the large family.

The every day dining room is the current dining room however the original was enlarge. The pantry located in the dining room was originally an entry way into the home, you can still see the steps outside, to bring in vegetable from the garden and not track dirt throughout the house. The Massage room, its bath and the half bath were all part of the kitchen, which was later used as maid quarters. The current kitchen was the library, bath, and bedroom of grandma's.

At one point the home was used as a boarding house to bring in money for the family the Pyle's would rent rooms to the Oil field workers who came in to work the fields.

We look forward to receiving pictures from Robert when the home was being built. We will post those to the web site for your web visitors to view.
